Dom Woke Later Than Usual

It was as if some other worldly force was holding him in place. Pinned flat, he opened his eyes and breathed sharply inhaling as he looked around the room. He tried to lift his arms and legs but they wouldn’t move, each limb felt a hundred times its weight. Was he cold or hot he couldn’t be sure. Fear and confusion were racing through his mind. He tried to make sense of his surroundings, to work out where he was, what was happening. Dom’s inability to move was the thing that scared him the most. His initial confusion began to…

Wake Up

“Wake up.” A voice disturbs my slumber. “Wake up now.” It’s urgent, it wakes me up. Who was in my room, someone or something for sure. A ghost, a dream, the NSA. Gasping for air I drift back from that world into this one. Sweating in the cold night air I am I think now awake. A voice, the  voice, it was a he or was it she. “Wake up, wake up now before it really is too late.” I stir and force my aching body upright I sit on the edge of my bed and pull back the blinds.…

The Prospect

High on a city hill they named it ‘The Prospect’. After the view I suppose from its back door. It had to be the view. The Prospect of Leeds an imposing terrace of houses painted white, set against the city skyline. That dark and dirty city skyline. A Inn of some repute, a  rough and ready tavern. A haven for kids in search of fun and under age booze. One of the many Tetley Pubs in Leeds, one on every corner. Drinking came easy, no one stopped or you warned you. Pubs welcomed you, we were all locals at them by…

The Red Door

What a day! It started like any other. Shower, breakfast and out of the door to work. As I left my apartment things got a little weird, I found a letter outside my door. It seemed genuine with my address on it and a name, Molly Baxter in big letters. That’s me if you were wondering. Inside there were just three things an address, directions and an old key. That was it! What’s a girl to do, I was completely intrigued? It wouldn’t harm to take a look; it might shed some light on things. It turned out it wasn’t too far from…

Time Shift Burst

This working wood, a man-made world. Sky meets earth, trees reach water. No trimmings, frills, coffee or cake. A place to walk and think amongst the dark, sinister ditches. Life supporting, flood preventing arteries. Broad, leafy lanes, threading all around. How England must have looked when William took his throne. No ancient Kings in search of war today. These roads have one true purpose. To transport forestry behemoths, arriving for the cull. A stand of Willow, Oak or Ash may be spared. The lucky few will remain at the end of the day, for now though peace and beauty. Narrow secret paths winding deep into the far…

Ouiji Board

Scaring and daring seemed the way of things in those days. Younger children were fair game for the older lads on our streets. Clive and me were good friends, we had started primary school together two years previously. Clive had an older brother who never hung around with us. We were seven and I think he must have been around ten. On this particular day during the school holiday he must have been at a loose end.. Although we hadn’t had many of them the long summer holidays were wonderful. The 1960’s don’t seem long ago to me sitting here…

The Churchyard

I’d seen the church on the hill many times driving home from work. One thousand years old people tell me. I had lived in the village long enough yet never taken a wander, today would be the day. Take some photos, do some thinking. Friends think I am a bit weird visiting graveyards, they have never said in so many word but I know that’s what they think. It was a big churchyard I suppose when the village was small. Now though the place more like a suburb of Leeds and the old churchyard is pretty much full. There was…

Rob

“Rob wake up, you have to be at college in 20 minutes,” Rob’s mother knew what teenage boys were like. He was the last of three sons she still had at home. She loved him as mothers do and knew he would make a fine hard working member of society once he was a little older. At the moment though it was fair to say he was a bit of a slob and this daily toil to get him out of bed and on the way to college was hard work. “OK Mum stop shouting I have plenty of time…

Fallen Trees

The whole world is there in trees, laid out for all to see. Fallen trees damaged, then miraculously healing themselves. New growth from apparent dead limbs. A slow definite purpose, wonderful beauty. Wandering through woodland my mind plays tricks on me. I see a striking woodland bird scurrying among the leaves. Or is it simply a gnarled twisted stump. I see a fallen tree in some ancient pool all rock, root and grass. My mind is over active, there can be only one explanation for what I see hidden but in plain view. Petrified for millennia at last broke free. A young and freshly hatched…

Avalanche

This I never expected, alone high on a mountain pass in this tomb of ice and snow. I am not sure how much air there is in my little cave, enough for a few days, a few hours. It could be worse, at least I have escaped the terrible pestilence rampaging through my land. There is no name for it, no one has ever seen anything like it. The wise men and elders can do nothing. A cough, then a fever followed by quick death seems to be its way. Many thought it was the plague or some long forgotten illness…
