A Cold Room

“OK stop there Frank. We don’t do surnames around here, your first name will do”, said the man in the black suit. The unimposing room was cold and poorly lit. Two chairs, a table, a small electric heater working flat-out without making much difference. Frank sat on his uncomfortable wooden seat facing the man who had introduced himself as Jake. A stern-faced young man. He just sat looking at frank, as if trying to work him out. “Where am I? said Frank. “The afterlife of course”, said Jake. That was awkward, not least because it meant Frank was now dead. That…

The Restaurant Corridor

I stop puzzled, turning slowly this is crazy. I came out of that door, the toilet I’m sure of it. Maye I’m having a funny turn, too much booze. I have been to a restaurant with a group of friends. I can remember everything. The job, house, car, children. All of it but I feel so disorientated. Where was I? that was it in the corridor of the restaurant. I’d used the toilet and then we were going home. I just can’t find the door back to the restaurant. I turn to go back I can’t find the door that I’ve…

Whispers On the Wind

Whispers! Have you heard them at night, in the dusty attic, damp cellar or cold storeroom? They are there all around us. Some think they are whispers from God and angels or from Satan. Voices from the afterlife, the graveyard, the dark side. When you least expect them you will surely hear them. Whispers are there in our heads and hearts. They can be heard at sea, on the wind, at moonrise, at sunrise, on a quiet beach. The movies have taught us that you can hear whispers in the static on television and radio sets, or even the internet. There are of course whispers from space,…

The Churchyard

I’d seen the church on the hill many times driving home from work. One thousand years old people tell me. I had lived in the village long enough yet never taken a wander, today would be the day. Take some photos, do some thinking. Friends think I am a bit weird visiting graveyards, they have never said in so many word but I know that’s what they think. It was a big churchyard I suppose when the village was small. Now though the place more like a suburb of Leeds and the old churchyard is pretty much full. There was…

One English Pound

One whole English pound was a lot of money to find. It meant my day of fun at the movies could last a little longer. I don’t even remember what I went to see. I can’t be sure it was such a long time ago. I have seen so many movies since then some good, some bad and others I just can’t remember. It could have been ‘Tora, Tora, Tora’ or ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ or was it ‘Fiddler on The Roof’. They were all good. The ones I didn’t like were the horror ones ‘Carrie’, ‘Friday The 13th’, those kind…

The Artist

As he walked into his garden the artist was presented with a beautiful sight. The sun shining, dew glistening on the grass. The garden stretching out before him. Flower beds bursting with colour and life. First thing coffee, then to work in the studio. The rambling old Victorian house, so untidy. A world of maps, books, half-finished paintings and art materials. Dust covered furniture, dark empty rooms. A dark empty place. His night had been spent like many before drinking himself to a point of unconsciousness. Many years had passed since his wife had left him to his wild destructive lifestyle.…

The Underpass

The cab driver didn’t know exactly where the young couple wanted to be and was a little suspicious at first. Well dressed, clean, clearly just in on one of the many trains from the south and they want a taxi to the roadside in the post-industrial wilderness south of the city. They seemed nice kids so he went with his instinct and took them. “What exactly is it you’re looking for kids there’s nothing in that part of town. It’s just a wasteland,” said the cab driver. “There’s something new we’ve heard about on the internet we’re going to try,”…

‘To Whom It May Concern’

If you are reading this letter it means that you have found my box of keys. It’s a long story and I haven’t got much time, they have said tonight will be the night they come for me. I don’t know what to do. The only thing I could think was write a short letter to warn the next unfortunate soul who finds my collection of old keys. Iron and brass, all shapes and sizes they are quite beautiful. Well that’s what I once thought. I found a key today on my way home, it isn’t the first time this…

Greetings Stranger

The Café was completely full. Late breakfasts and early lunches that sort of thing. It was Georges first visit. His new girlfriend Jane had been many times and had got her favourite seat. She sat on the high back leather bench that ran the entire length of the old Victorian tea rooms. The place was all oak panels and mirrors. Very traditional, quite expensive. George thought it was all a bit Bohemian. He liked Jane, lunch for two tea, coffee, a club sandwich and Welsh rarebit. Today might be the day he would get to know her just a little better. George…
