Restoring Order

From the first to the last each generation passes in a single heartbeat. The earliest glimmer of life-like new-born stars that quickly reach their end. A million stories come and go in seconds. Now nothing except endless leaves drifting silently in the wind names, dates, achievements soon to be just echoes reaching far into the past.  Another night’s sleep ends abruptly. The room is still dark, a  grey half-light seeping from outside in. The distant moon weak, losing its battle with darkness. The darkness that fills our lives. A darkness so alien yet part of what we are. Tension lifts and…

The Brooch

After weeks of wind and rain today was perfect, still and dry. The nearby turbines stood motionless, like bleached white skeletons against the dark sky. As ever the dog stood close by its owner panting softly. Occasionally a bird spiralled skywards startled by something unseen. Standing by the edge of the wood at the corner of the field overlooking the valley, Bill expected one of two things would happen. He was a superstitious man, a believer in good and evil. Gods and ghosts. That type of thing. It all made perfect sense to him. One month before he had found the…

Whispers On the Wind

Whispers! Have you heard them at night, in the dusty attic, damp cellar or cold storeroom? They are there all around us. Some think they are whispers from God and angels or from Satan. Voices from the afterlife, the graveyard, the dark side. When you least expect them you will surely hear them. Whispers are there in our heads and hearts. They can be heard at sea, on the wind, at moonrise, at sunrise, on a quiet beach. The movies have taught us that you can hear whispers in the static on television and radio sets, or even the internet. There are of course whispers from space,…

Dom Woke Later Than Usual

It was as if some other worldly force was holding him in place. Pinned flat, he opened his eyes and breathed sharply inhaling as he looked around the room. He tried to lift his arms and legs but they wouldn’t move, each limb felt a hundred times its weight. Was he cold or hot he couldn’t be sure. Fear and confusion were racing through his mind. He tried to make sense of his surroundings, to work out where he was, what was happening. Dom’s inability to move was the thing that scared him the most. His initial confusion began to…

Wake Up

“Wake up.” A voice disturbs my slumber. “Wake up now.” It’s urgent, it wakes me up. Who was in my room, someone or something for sure. A ghost, a dream, the NSA. Gasping for air I drift back from that world into this one. Sweating in the cold night air I am I think now awake. A voice, the  voice, it was a he or was it she. “Wake up, wake up now before it really is too late.” I stir and force my aching body upright I sit on the edge of my bed and pull back the blinds.…

Rob

“Rob wake up, you have to be at college in 20 minutes,” Rob’s mother knew what teenage boys were like. He was the last of three sons she still had at home. She loved him as mothers do and knew he would make a fine hard working member of society once he was a little older. At the moment though it was fair to say he was a bit of a slob and this daily toil to get him out of bed and on the way to college was hard work. “OK Mum stop shouting I have plenty of time…

Night Train

The night train approaches as I prepare to step down onto the tracks. This feels wrong, in the back of my mind something is telling me Londoners don’t commute by walking through the tunnels from one station to the next. Yet on the other hand it feels completely right. The train doesn’t stop and in seconds it has passed me by. Whooshing and rumbling through the station. It’s gone I’m safe to walk along the dark, warm and windy tunnel. I can see the light of the next station ahead half a mile or so in the distance. People are…

That’s Absurd

Each night I catch the bus home, same number, same route, same time. It’s just that, well weird stuff happens. Most nights I don’t even remember being on it. When I do, oh boy! There was the time an entire faceless wedding party got on, we had to make a fifty-mile detour to Sheffield. Turned out they were all people I knew. Another time we were chased by a rhinoceros and an elephant. It turned out OK, they both managed to get on and sat right in front of me for the whole way. We’ve been abroad, in space, under the sea. The bus once…
