High In The Tower

The Peregrine watches over the city from the inner city cliff surveying the glass and and concrete peaks. A different perspective on our troubled world. No hunting pigeons today, hanging on to the stone face of the building and riding out the storm her priority. The wind howls around the building like screaming demons demanding entry. Sitting in the lobby far below I hear voices in my head maybe real who knows. This building is alive with noise thumps, thuds, creaks, cracks. These old walls don’t shake but air smashes into them like tremors from a far away earthquake. Built to…

Restricted Zone

The fencing had gone up overnight a whole building surrounded by the high steel  that surrounds construction sites. It annoyed me only because it barred my usual path to work. I was late and making a detour around the perimeter was going to make me late. I enjoyed working at the university on a weekend. The campus was often quieter than normal and I could catch up on all the things I hadn’t done through the week. It looked like  they were relaying the lawns and pavement outside the physics laboratories. The  building was big lump of  cement. Seven storeys high made of…

The Dyodedra

An ancient lowland wood full of life, yet not. A pool hidden, with secrets! A silent, secret pool in the deepest part of the woodland. An ordinary stretch of forest in a lowland plain in the north of England. The Vale of York, a huge flat expanse of land nestled between hills and moors forty miles apart. The modern age is all around planes overhead, railways and roads dissect the land. Yet here in the heart of the forest is something  so bizarre, as old as time. In this pool there is nothing modern, nothing clean or fresh. As we are made of elements…

Outdoor Chess

There is a special time in the forest, a vague time. You might miss it, closing the gate as you leave the wood. Rushing to find your way home as darkness falls. You really need to stop, sit down. Relax and wait for the players to return.   In this place, it is chess in the forest. The game as always delayed till nightfall. In other places, there will be different forms of fun a swing, a stream a tree to climb. The players will return as they do each night. Unseen as they gather and play their ghostly game…

Closed Until Further Notice

‘Closed until further notice’ said the sign on the door. It had caused quite a stir among the regular customers. The shop was on a small parade in a run down corner of the city. Frank had been running the bakery for such a long time. No one could remember him taking holidays, let alone just closing and disappearing. Every morning while the city slept Frank was baking. His bread was so fresh, not just bread though. Cakes, pastries and biscuits. The food from the ‘Floury Baker’ was legendary. No one quite knew how he managed to keep the standard…

Did They Just Say My Name?

Sit quietly in a park, a school, a town centre. Well almost anywhere in truth and a rat or two or will not be far away. Night or day they are always there skulking and scurrying. I was among the haters for most of my life. The only good rat being a dead one as far as I was concerned. Poison, trapping, shooting, setting dogs on them. It’s all acceptable they are of course vermin a creature to be destroyed. We try tp wipe them from the face of the earth. The trouble is I think they know. They sense our…

The Library Basement

Jack had worked in the University library every Saturday for ten years. He enjoyed it, the people, the books and the wonderful old building. Five circular floors, two upper circular galleries overlooking the ornate Victorian reading room. The two floors down were basements quiet and dimly lit. Crammed with tens of thousands of books and studious silent people. Jack always thought how much the reading room was a contrast to the basements. Windows in the buildings domed roof and a huge chandelier. The space was always filled with light and cool air. Often he would stand looking around this cathedral…

Tuesday Night

I’d been following the lumbering white Mercedes for a few miles heading into the city. Late evening on a Tuesday night and the roads were quiet. I suppose mainly people like myself going to or coming from work. The only thing I had noticed different about it was its speed. It was slow, the driver seemed uncertain of the way. The other thing, it was from the French Department 2A. I decided to overtake, it overtook me straight back. There was a young man driving. His car was left hand drive, mine right. We were just a few feet away from each other. He was in his early…

Meet At The Mall

The four friends met as usual on the last Friday of the month. A few drinks, a meal, a laugh and a joke. They all looked forward to it and had been doing it for many years. Guy and Sue as always sat side by side opposite Frank and Fiona. The talk was of nothing in particular work, football, music all just general stuff. The restaurant was a smart Italian on the third floor of shiny new shopping centre in the heart of Leeds. A city that had changed much over the years. From grimy industrial town in the late twentieth century…

‘How Much?’

‘How much?’ The cosmetic surgeon sat impassively at his desk. He knew the old man sitting in front of him would pay, they always did. He was fabulously wealthy, anyhow if they came this far they always paid. It was a small price for a procedure so revolutionary that few even knew it existed. Just a few miles away in the heart of the city a young man was being roughly bundled into a van. His whole life lay ahead of him though it would soon be changed forever. The pair met briefly in the cold, sterile operating theatre with introductions conducted by one of the…
