The Churchyard

I’d seen the church on the hill many times driving home from work. One thousand years old people tell me. I had lived in the village long enough yet never taken a wander, today would be the day. Take some photos, do some thinking. Friends think I am a bit weird visiting graveyards, they have never said in so many word but I know that’s what they think. It was a big churchyard I suppose when the village was small. Now though the place more like a suburb of Leeds and the old churchyard is pretty much full. There was…

Zombie New Year

New Years Day, a fresh start is what I promise myself each and every year. Always the same, broken Christmas lights atop the village lamppost. An arm and leg swinging, kicking out for all the world just like a wayward zombie. A grey, wet, malaise settles on the morn I need to seek some refuge in a nearby town. We were just a few feet away from each other. He was in his early…

Shackled

The old doors hadn’t been opened in hundreds of years, today though was time. The great and the good of the district had gathered to see events unfold. A small crowd stood quietly outside this ancient abbey. Two men dressed in black stepped up, two men with keys. Their order had been protectors of the keys and the legend for twelve generations. Protectors until today a day predicted long ago. The day of a rare astronomical event. The spring equinox and a solar eclipse, a unique event. The earth was about to go dark indicating the time had come to unlock the past. Long…
