Whispers On the Wind

Whispers! Have you heard them at night, in the dusty attic, damp cellar or cold storeroom? They are there all around us. Some think they are whispers from God and angels or from Satan. Voices from the afterlife, the graveyard, the dark side. When you least expect them you will surely hear them. Whispers are there in our heads and hearts. They can be heard at sea, on the wind, at moonrise, at sunrise, on a quiet beach. The movies have taught us that you can hear whispers in the static on television and radio sets, or even the internet. There are of course whispers from space,…

Never Pass That Way Again

A simple inscription carved in stone, there for eternity. Young boys destined to be craftsmen, chiseling, and working soft stone. Hours of toil, Jack brought the hammer, George the chisel. Slow laborious work for the unskilled hand and poorly trained eye. The warmth of a summer’s evening. That little street of poor hard-working people, some away fighting, the others resting before a week of toil ahead. Quiet as you can, the neighbours might not want their path carving up. For two mischievous lads just one more adventure in a long hot summer littered with many mad capers. The very best of…

Another Day In Paradise

It’s a baking hot day and our street is buzzing with people, kids, cars and trucks all rushing by. Mum is inside cleaning and cooking. Dad’s at work I miss him a lot, so does mum. He says the long distance driving helps to pay the bills and I should be no trouble for her. I am spending the day with Tom, my best friend, we have been friends since I can remember. We do everything together, neither of us have any brothers and sisters and mum says that’s what we have become like. He is late as usual. I…

‘I Think I’ve Just Seen Bob’

“The strangest thing happened on my way here, I thought I saw Bob,” said Pat “You can’t have he’s dead, we all went to his funeral,” said Harry. The three men were best friends, worked together and at weekends were drinking buddies. Until recently Bob Dixon had been part of their little group. Each Friday after work they had a night out, pubs, bands and a curry. “I know but that’s the fourth time I’ve seen him this month. Only from the back, I could have sworn it was him,” said Pat “It was a car crash wasn’t it,” said…

The Underpass

The cab driver didn’t know exactly where the young couple wanted to be and was a little suspicious at first. Well dressed, clean, clearly just in on one of the many trains from the south and they want a taxi to the roadside in the post-industrial wilderness south of the city. They seemed nice kids so he went with his instinct and took them. “What exactly is it you’re looking for kids there’s nothing in that part of town. It’s just a wasteland,” said the cab driver. “There’s something new we’ve heard about on the internet we’re going to try,”…

Flash Talk

I walk into the room a little gingerly, my Beth is the only person I know. There are so many strangers, I don’t like crowds. She is happy though, the life and soul of the party. I must try to get to know her friends, slowly over the course of the next few minutes I work my way around the room introducing myself to one after the other. Hugging, kissing, touching these modern ways make me cringe. It bothers me when people are over friendly. If ever I choose then I will show them affection and not before. Some talk…

Eduardo’s Story

‘Wonderful view eh,’ said the old man who had appeared behind me. He must have walked up quietly as I stood enchanted by the view of the old port far below the citadel walls. This window in the ancient castle ramparts was clearly a popular place for tourists taking photos. “It is yes, quite breath-taking,” here we go no doubt, he’ll want money. To guide me round, be my friend and I only want to take a photo. “Are you English or German?” he asked. This always the happens when I am abroad, being mistaken for a German. It’s not surprising I…

A New Jumper For Dotty

George and Cynthia walked with purpose through the park. To all the world a perfect couple. He was happy, a spring in his step chattering away.  “I’m so excited aunty has agreed to knit something for Dotty.” George’s aunt was knitting a jumper for his baby. On nice days she spent most afternoons in the park knitting and chatting. A flask filled with tea and a basket full of wool. She loved to knit nice warm clothes for families with new additions. Her little red creations could be seen all over town. Red was the only colour she worked with.…

Always Wash The Dishes

No one warned them about the ants. Spain was safe, no wars, nice climate, a good health system. What could go wrong? They knew not to drink the water but no one said anything about bloody ants? Club San Juan and Apartments was perched on a cliff by a beautiful sandy beach and packed with tourists from all over Europe enjoying the sun. Bob and Carol had been looking forward to their trip for months. They had such a good time the first night that they went to bed without even washing their dinner plates. Mussels, fries and a few glasses…
